Ruah Bhay, ERYT500, M.A. & Prenatal Certified

WELCOME! NAMASTE! BIENVENUE! SHALOM! AYUBOWEN! ASALAAMALEKUM!

Thank you for visiting me, I'm so glad that you are here!  My name is Ruah Bhay, I’m a teacher of yoga, meditation, breathwork, mindfulness, wellness, amazing abs and more!  I’m also a mom of two and a native New Yorker and even though I have traveled and lived around the world, I feel so fortunate to live in my amazing Brooklyn community where I am a senior teacher and mentor at Yogaworks and Equinox.

I am here to guide and support you on an inward journey to discover the teacher and healer inside of you and be your own balm that soothes the various layers of stress, anxiety, pain, depression that can accumulate in everyday life. Through the teachings of yoga on and off the mat, I am here to offer opportunities to plant seeds of nourishment that will grow all of the amazing qualities that already dwell inside of you.

It is my mission to help and support you on your personal journey through yoga, meditation and overall wellness guidance so you can be the most rested, relaxed, healthy strong and mindful self that you can be.  When we connect to the best versions of ourselves, it is so much easier to not only make the most of life, but also to show up for and be of service to those around us.

Just as green leaves have beautiful colors inside of them that await the opportunity to arise in the right conditions, I believe that all of us have the potential to connect to our inner beauty and shine brightly from the inside out once we are given the time, energy and space to be the best that we can be.  In my role as a teacher, I do my best to help you on the path of yoga, meditation and mindfulness as  a way to elevate your best self from within to outflow it generously into your life and share it with others around you.

MY STORY

“You have been given this precious gift of life, use it well and do your best to help those around you.” These are the words my mom shared with me as I started my journey as a yoga and meditation teacher and wellness leader.

I had just returned from living for years in Senegal and then France. My mom and I were having lunch in a cafe on Hudson Street, in the neighborhood I grew up in.  As we discussed the possibilities of what comes next in life, her words touched my heart and in that moment I knew what I had already known, whatever decisions I would make next, it would be about helping others.  The path that I took was a winding one through various countries and careers, but yoga was there for me the entire time and led me to the past 15+ years of having the privilege to do the important work I do today with my students.

I discovered early in life that a daily morning yoga and meditation practice makes a world of a difference and have continued to commit myself to this routine for decades.  Of course, as a mom of two and a liver of life in the real world, interruptions happen - even to the most dedicated practitioners of the world!  What I have learned is that committing yourself towards and nurturing a routine of investing in you your overall health every day is not only accessible but easy to maintain.  Once you have set the actions in motion and days become weeks, weeks become months, months become years and years suddenly become decades.

Over decades of showing up for myself and becoming a teacher and guide to my children, students and community, I have come to value the extraordinary inspirations that derive from the philosophy of yoga.  Just as every time we practice yoga, our body experiences the pose a little differently, every time we explore a philosophy of yoga, new meaning emerges that is relevant to the stage of life we are in.

It’s not that yoga and meditation magically take away our ailments of life, but rather, when we have the luxury to practice taking such great care of ourselves through yoga and meditation, whatever life is offering us in the here and now is suddenly easier to navigate. The full experience of yoga, meditation and mindfulness, just as they have to so many, have brought me extraordinary self-awareness, mental clarity, physical strength and emotional balance.   The reason I teach today is exactly the same as I did when I started.  When you love something and it helps you so much, you naturally want to shout it from the mountain tops and share it generously with others.  It is my honor and privilege to be on the path as a yoga and meditation teacher and I hope to have the chance to pass along all that has been so valuable to me and share it with you!

PRAISE/GRATITUDE
It is truly a privilege and honor to have taught so many extraordinary beings.  Over the years of teaching, I have learned that it is often my students that I learn from most and inspire me to be the best that I can be.  One of the words of a student in Sanskrit is chatra, which also means umbrella.  The significance is that the student protects the teacher from negativity and helps elevate the best in a teacher to show up as well as they can for those around them.  I am deeply thankful to my students over so many years and here are their words of gratitude from our time together...

“Ruah is a giving person, who is  incredibly generous with her knowledge. Her Memorial Day retreat  put me in a state of bliss. I left feeling both relaxed, and uplifted and energized to get back to my life. My physical yoga practice deepened and expanded: her personalized adjustments are EVERYTHING... just what I needed  to understand my body. Also, her guided meditation was sublime. She led me to a place of calmness deep within that I didn’t even know existed, let alone how to tap into! Most importantly, thanks to  her guidance, I find that I am able to recreate it for myself whenever I want. That is the most wonderful thing about a retreat with Ruah: not only do the benefits linger, but she also equips you with the tools you need to return to them time and again. A truly unforgettable experience.”

"Ruah is one of the kindest and most talented women it has been my good fortune to know. She was called to teach yoga and meditation; those who have the opportunity to learn from her should leap at the chance."

"I absolutely recommend going on a retreat with Ruah.  No hyperbole, I think a retreat with Ruah is prescriptive for a life best lived. Ruah is the ultimate guide. She leads with clarity, grace, precision, wisdom, and abundant love. She meets and guides each person in the unique way they need to take their yoga practice (on and off the mat) to the next level. Practicing with Ruah in such an intimate, hands-on way elevated my practice in profound and long-lasting ways that I will be grateful for throughout my journey as an aspiring yogi. I left this retreat inspired, strong and ready (though another day would still have been lovely!) to go back into the world and bring my fullest, most loving, and present self to others. This retreat was a truly life-affirming experience."
"Thank you, Ruah, from the bottom of my heart, for all the time, energy, love, and generosity of spirit that you brought to each and every moment of this retreat. I love how you facilitated us to all authentically connect, take time for ourselves and come away with a newly discovered community. My cup overflows."

“The unfolding of my life after starting to practice and learn about the deeper dimensions of yoga with Ruah has been incredibly enlightening on and off the mat.  Her teachings are with me daily and the people that Ruah has connected me to in class are just beyond wonderful, I am so grateful.”
“Ruah’s impassioned yogi spirit has energized and awakened my 10 year yoga practice from its sleepy hibernation. Ruah provides the perfect balance of spiritual teaching and challenging asanas, within an inspiring sphere in which to deepen one’s practice.

Having practiced with a myriad of instructors, it is easy to identify a truly devoted teacher with a breadth of knowledge at her fingertips. Ruah has taught me new ways to find the most basic pose, while presenting me with old challenges and boundaries to push past.
It is rare to find a teacher as inspired and passionate about Yoga. I feel blessed to have Ruah as a guiding light in my practice.”

“It has been an amazing experience taking yoga classes with Ruah. I used to be the kind of person who never took interest in sports or activities.  I was extremely hesitant and found it very difficult to do yoga in the beginning. More than 4 months of taking several privates and weekly group class with Ruah I feel so much progress in my body and my mind!
Every class with Ruah I learn something new about yoga and myself!  Now I am able to do so many movements I had never even believed I would be able to do - especially when Ruah first demonstrated the poses so beautifully!  She understands the body and somehow understands my own body, too.
Ruah is a careful guide in showing me how to make adjustments so that I feel safe to do poses and even comfortable enough to test my own limitations.  Ruah is very attentive; she watches every movement of every person and gives appropriate feedback.  She physically helps or shows how to do certain things that work for each individual, all the while maintaining the flow of the class.
Ruah is a strong young woman both mentally and physically, which shows especially while demonstrating poses or when giving adjustments in downward facing dog.  Ruah is a supportive and encouraging human being.  She inspires me to do my best, even when faced with the most challenging poses.  Ruah's class makes me want to try things over and over again just to seek that extra improvement.

To know Ruah, is to love her. She is a joy to be around and I find that my own mood improves just when I see her warm smile. I am so grateful that I have met her in life and look forward to continuing to enjoy and be inspired by her classes.”
